Dali Tie-Dye: The Millennial Breath Between Blue and White
Tie-dye, anciently known as “Jiaoxie,” is a dyeing technique that employs physical resist-dyeing using yarn, thread, or rope. Artisans use methods like tying, stitching, binding, gathering, and clamping to create folds and physical barriers on the fabric. After dyeing and untying, patterns emerge where the dye could not penetrate the bound sections, resulting in unique, layered patterns with soft color transitions. Its greatest artistic characteristic is the natural, serendipitous texture—no two pieces are ever identical.
Documented history of tie-dye in China spans over 1,500 years, flourishing particularly in the Tang Dynasty among the nobility. The Bai ethnic group in Dali has passed down this craft for generations, primarily in villages like Zhoucheng and Xizhou, where almost every household has a dye vat and produces tie-dye, earning it the title “Hometown of Ethnic Tie-Dye.” In 2006, Bai tie-dye was listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
